La Costa serves as both Chairperson and Treasurer of her own campaign committee. The Chairperson section lists a Lahaina, HI P.O. Box — but the Treasurer section for the same person lists a Newhall, California street address with an 818 area code (San Fernando Valley).

What this means: Having a California address in the treasurer section does not by itself establish that La Costa is not a Maui resident — she may maintain a California address for other purposes while residing in Lahaina. The Lahaina P.O. Box is consistent with a local presence. However, a P.O. Box is not a physical residence, and the California street address and phone number raise a legitimate question worth noting.

Hawaii residency law: Hawaii Revised Statutes §12-3 requires that candidates for county office be domiciled in the county for which they seek office. Domicile is a legal concept meaning the place a person intends to be their permanent home — not merely where they have an address. The Hawaii Office of Elections reviews candidate eligibility at filing.
